Get to Know the Divisions of the Attorney General's Office
- Represents the Office of Recovery Services in establishing paternity, enforcing and modifying child support orders, prosecuting individuals for not paying child support and recovering improperly received public benefits.
- Represents the Department of Health on issues including communicable disease control, emergency medical services, health facility licensing and certification of long-term care providers
- Represents the Division of Child and Family Services in child protection matters
- Initiates proceedings to remove abused or neglected children from unsafe environments and provide them with proper care
- Petitions for termination of parental rights so abused or neglected children who have been permanently removed from homes may be adopted
- Represents Utah agencies, officers, and employees in civil cases appealed to the state and federal appellate courts
- Provides legal research and appellate advocacy assistance and training to other lawyers in the AG's Office who work at the trial court and administrative agency levels.
- Represents the divisions of the Department of Commerce: Securities, Consumer Protection,
- Occupational and Professional Licensing, Real Estate and Corporations
- Enforces state and federal antitrust laws - more on Antitrust issues.
- Investigates and prosecutes white-collar crimes
- Prosecutes multi-county, conflict of interest, and other complex child abuse cases
- Provides training, research assistance, and other services regarding child abuse and domestic violence
- Administers and provides technical support to Utah’s Children’s Justice Centers
- Manages all appeals of felony convictions obtained by Utah’s county attorneys
- Handles all appeals of juvenile offenders involved in serious crimes
- Defends all post-conviction petitions of prisoners challenging their state convictions
- Assists county attorneys in homicide cases and other complex matters;
- Prosecutes multi-county cases and conflict of interest cases and
- Includes prosecutors who specialize in insurance fraud, narcotics enforcement, Medicaid fraud, welfare fraud and criminal tax fraud.
- Advises the State’s educational entities, including the Board of Education, the Board of Regents and Utah’s ten state colleges and universities and
- Handles collection of student loan accounts and University Hospital accounts.
- Represents the Department of Environmental Quality in enforcement of air pollution, water pollution, solid and hazardous waste, radiation and drinking water laws and
- Investigates and prosecutes environmental violations.
- Investigates multi-county and/or multi-victim cases involving white-collar crime, organized crime, government corruption, computer crime, criminal real estate fraud and child abuse and
- Assists in major street crime investigations, such as homicide, when requested by local authorities.
- Defends all state agencies and institutions of higher education, school districts, and their employees against civil lawsuits for money damages, covered by the Risk Management Fund;
- Provides legal counsel to the Division of Risk Management and
- Provides employment law advice to all state agencies and defends them against employee grievances.
- Handles matters regarding water resources, water rights, state lands, parks and recreation, wildlife resources, oil, gas and mining;
- Protects Utah’s natural resources from federal intrusion and
- Represents Utah on matters of Indian law
- Represents state officials and agencies, such as Agriculture, Alcoholic Beverage Control, Community and Economic Development, Facilities Construction and Management, Human Resource Management, Public Safety and Transportation and
- Prepares the majority of the Attorney General’s opinions and conducts Civil Review Committee.
- Represents the Tax Commission, Department of Financial Institutions, the Insurance Department and state agencies that issue bonds and
- Handles tax litigation and bankruptcy.
