Our Departments

Our Departments

Led by Attorney General Derek Brown, the Office of the Utah Attorney General is committed to serving the people of Utah with integrity, transparency, and dedication to the rule of law. Attorney General Brown is also supported by Chief Deputy Attorney General and General Counsel Daniel Burton. Moreover, the office has five departments: Appellate, Civil, Public Protection, Criminal, and Administration.

Appellate

The Appellate Department, led by Solicitor General Stanford E. Purser, plays a vital role in ensuring Utah’s laws are fairly interpreted and upheld at the appellate level. The department has three divisions:

Civil

The Civil Department, led by Mark E. Burns, provides legal counsel and representation to state agencies across a wide range of public service areas. Additionally, the goal of the department is to reach the best legal outcomes for Utah taxpayers.

The department is the largest in our office, spanning across nine divisions, so the state and its officials and agencies can receive high-quality counsel:

Public Protection

The Public Protection Department, led by Douglas Crapo, is dedicated to protecting the public from deceptive and unfair practices. Importantly, this department represents the Utah Department of Commerce in court. The department is made up of two divisions, so consumers can be protected:

Criminal

The Criminal Department, led by Stewart Young, plays an essential role in protecting Utah communities by investigating and prosecuting crimes across the state, so Utah can become safer. In order to carry out these goals, the department is organized into five divisions:

Administration

Administration, led by John Dougall, oversees the operations of the Office, including managing the budget, legal support, technology, and software. Also, Administration houses the Office’s constituent services team.
