DEA/HIDTA/UAG Drug Prosecution Unit

“A Dynamic Partnership in Action”

Since 1999, The Utah Attorney General has participated with the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Rocky Mountain High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area to form the DEA/HIDTA AG Prosecution Unit. This rare combination of resources and investigative/prosecution assets has resulted in an unique federal, state and local partnership that has served Utah citizens for over 15 years. This prosecution unit falls within the scope of the AG Special Prosecution Section.

The HIDTA Mission

The High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Program is a federal program administered by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, and provides resources to assist federal, state, local and tribal law enforcement agencies to address drug trafficking in specifically designated areas of the United States. The mission of the Rocky Mountain HIDTA is to facilitate cooperation and coordination among those agencies throughout Colorado, Wyoming and Utah. This mission is accomplished through joint multi-agency co-located drug task forces sharing information and working cooperatively with other drug enforcement initiatives, including interdiction. The Rocky Mountain HIDTA was first designated in 1996.

The DEA Mission

The U.S. Department of Justice, Drug Enforcement Administration has as its mission to enforce the controlled substances laws and regulations of the United States and to bring to the criminal and civil justice systems of the United States, or any other competent jurisdiction, those organizations, and principal members of organizations, involved in the growing, manufacture, or distribution of controlled substances appearing in or destined for illicit traffic in the United States; and to recommend and support non-enforcement programs aimed at reducing the availability of and demand for illicit controlled substances on the domestic and international markets. The Salt Lake office of the DEA has been the home for many years to the Metro Narcotics Task Force, which combines federal, state and local personnel to serve the Greater Salt Lake area.

Utah AG Mission

The Utah Attorney General has provided prosecutorial resources to DEA Metro since 1999. With the financial support of RMHIDTA, two skilled and seasoned prosecutors co-located within DEA Metro provide technical assistance and criminal law services, including search warrants and other investigative process and asset forfeiture support. In conjunction with the United States Attorney, these prosecutors pursue violators of a variety of state and federal drug offenses.
