AG Reyes Welcomes Peruvian Leader Fujimori to Utah State Capitol

Attorney General Sean Reyes Discusses Combating Crime with Peruvian Leader Keiko Sofia Fujimori Higuchi

SALT LAKE CITY (April 15, 2015) — Attorney General Sean Reyes joined a delegation of Utah leaders today to welcome Keiko Sofia Fujimori Higuchi and her husband to the Utah State Capitol. She will speak at various venues this week, including Utah Valley University on Thurs. April 16.

Fujimori is the daughter of former President Alberto Fujimori, and was the youngest First Lady in the history of the Americas from 1994-2000 when she served after her parents’ divorce.  In 2006, she was elected to the Peruvian Congress with more votes than any winning candidate and lost a presidential runoff in 2011 to Ollanta Humala. She is currently the leading candidate for President of Peru in the 2016 elections.

“It was a honor to meet Keiko Fujimori today in our beautiful State Capitol,” said Attorney General Sean Reyes. “I was so impressed with her dedication to the people of Peru and her desire to lead with long term democratic solutions. Most importantly to our office, we discussed ways of fighting international crimes like human trafficking and cyber-terrorism that impact our countries so seriously. I look forward to an ongoing relationship where we can learn from each other and offer joint solutions for lower crime and better government.”

Attorney General Reyes and the Honorable Keiko Fujimori discussed the need to work together on a number of criminal issues including combating human trafficking and cyber-crimes. The two also discussed the possibility of sharing investigative and police training resources, something in which the Utah AG’s Office has taken a leadership role internationally with current cross-training relationships with other Spanish-speaking countries. The conversation was not all business oriented, as Reyes, of part Hispanic descent, conversed with Fujimori in Spanish and English, playfully confessing his love for Peruvian dishes like Lomo Saltado and ceviches.
