New Chief Civil Deputy Romano Takes Over for Retiring General Tarbet

Attorney General Announces Bridget Romano Now Serving As Chief Civil Deputy

Thanks Brian Tarbet for Leadership & Dedicated Service

SALT LAKE CITY September 10, 2015 – The Utah Attorney General’s Office is pleased to announce that Utah’s former Solicitor General, Bridget Romano, has begun serving the office as Chief Civil Deputy.  This move comes upon the official retirement of General Brian Tarbet, who has served two separate tenures in the Office of Attorney General.  In taking the helm of the Civil Department, Romano will be the highest ranking woman in the history of the Utah Attorney General’s Office other than former Attorney General Jan Graham.

“General Brian Tarbet led the Attorney General’s Office through extremely difficult times – and the respect he has earned throughout Utah is only surpassed by the respect he has from within our office. In so many ways, he is irreplaceable,” said Attorney General Reyes. “Fortunately, we have many exemplary leaders in our office and it is clear that Solicitor General Romano is the right person for the job.  Not only is she one of Utah’s most skilled attorneys, she proved to be an incredibly effective Solicitor General – and I’m excited for her to take the helm of our Civil Division.”

In this new capacity, Romano oversees the Education, Environment & Health, Highways & Utilities, Litigation, Natural Resources, State Agency Counsel and Tax & Financial Services divisions. Romano has been with Utah Attorney General’s Office since 1996, leaving for two short periods to work in private practice. She currently serves as Chair of the Utah State Bar, Appellate Practice Section and is on the Utah Supreme Court’s Appellate Rules Advisory Committee. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science/Economics from the University of Utah where she graduated Magna Cum Laude and was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Beta Kappa Honor Societies.  She received her law degree from the University of Utah, S.J. Quinney School of Law.

Since July 2011, Bridget Romano has served as Utah Solicitor General/Civil Appeals Director, where she oversaw the Appeals Department and has been chief appellate advocate for Utah.  Prior to becoming Solicitor General, she held the position of Assistant Attorney General and represented the State’s interests before Utah’s state and federal appellate and trial courts and before various administrative agencies. Tyler Green is Utah’s new Solicitor General and brings with him extensive national appellate litigating experience as well as significant United States Supreme Court experience. Major General Brian L. Tarbet served as Chief Civil Deputy since January 2014. He is a retired US Army Major General who commanded the Utah National Guard for 12 years of his 40 year military career. Brian previously served as General Counsel and Division Chief of Tax & Revenue in the Office of Attorney General which included service as counsel to the Utah State Tax Commission. During his service he was honored as Tax Attorney of the Year in 1998 by the Utah State Bar.
