Utah Attorney General’s Office Concludes Investigation of the Salt Lake City Mayoral Campaign of Ralph Becker

SALT LAKE CITY – Nov. 13, 2015 – Utah Attorney General’s Office has concluded its investigation of the Salt Lake City mayoral campaign of Ralph Becker for allegations of campaign misconduct. The investigation request was received on August 11, 2015.

“The Attorney General’s Investigation Division initiated an investigation based on the complainant’s allegations. Upon completion of the thorough investigation, the matter was presented to the Attorney General’s Justice Division to consider prosecution. The applicable standard for a prosecutor to apply to the evidence gathered in an investigation is whether there is a reasonable likelihood of conviction at trial.

“A select panel of experienced Justice Division prosecutors independently assessed the investigators’ case, including investigative reports, documents and witness interviews. After each prosecutor on the panel had the opportunity to review the investigation, each agreed independently and collaboratively this case lacks a reasonable likelihood of conviction. Based on the aforementioned, the Justice Division within the Utah Attorney General’s Office is declining any further action at this time.”

The Office of the Attorney General will not make further comments on this matter. For reference, the original complaint is on file with Salt Lake County Clerk Sherrie Swensen.
