Protecting Kids Online

Utah has a strong commitment to addressing social media's impact on mental health and the risk of online exploitation

There are important ways to keep kids safe online, particularly concerning social media’s impact on mental health and the risk of online exploitation. Utah has a strong commitment to addressing these issues.

As of December 2024, the Office of the Attorney General has filed two lawsuits against TikTok and one against Meta on behalf of Utah Department of Commerce’s Division of Consumer Protection. The first TikTok lawsuit, filed in October 2023, claims the platform’s algorithm “intentionally creates an addiction that targets our kids.” A second lawsuit in June 2024 alleges that TikTok profits from the sexual exploitation of children through its livestream feature.

Utah’s lawsuit against Meta in October 2023 alleges that the company designed deceptive features that keep kids engaged at the cost of their mental health.
