L.E.T.S. Stay Safe – Utah’s Firearm Safety & Violence Prevention Program

Discover how the LETS Stay Safe program is helping to educate Utah children and promote gun safety for teachers, parents and families

Overview

Attorney General Brown emphasizes the importance of firearm safety education for Utah’s children. The L.E.T.S. Stay Safe program teaches firearm safety and violence prevention. Developed by the Office of the Attorney General with the Utah State School Board and the Legislature, it provides materials and guidelines for parents and teachers to educate kids about firearm safety.

The program includes a 5-minute educational video that teaches children how to respond to firearms or threats at school. A 50-minute lesson plan, a PowerPoint presentation, posters, handouts, and a social media campaign accompany it.

The L.E.T.S. Stay Safe program uses the mnemonic “L.E.T.S.” to guide students in the following actions:

– Leave it alone

– Educate others

– Tell an adult

– Share threats with authorities

School resource and peace officers can present this lesson to students in grades 5 through 12 with the school district or charter school approval and written consent from a parent or guardian.

As outlined in Utah State Code 53A-13-106.5, the program is also available for parents and community leaders to enhance family and community education.
