Cooperative disability investigation unit

Combating disability fraud

About CDIU

What is the CDIU?

The Cooperative Disability Investigation Unit (CDIU) is a multi-agency task force that investigates suspected fraudulent disability claims filed under the Social Security Administration’s Title II and Title XVI programs.

The unit’s mission is to detect and prevent fraud before benefits are paid, ensuring that taxpayer-funded assistance goes only to those who truly need it. As of April 1, 2025, Utah’s CDIU ranked number 1 out of 50 CDI Units around the country.

Partner agencies

The CDIU operates as a collaborative task force involving:

  • Office of the Inspector General (OIG)
  • Social Security Administration (SSA)
  • Disability Determination Services (DDS)
  • Office of the Utah Attorney General (OAG)

Together, these agencies combine investigative authority, legal expertise, and program oversight to protect the integrity of federal disability programs.
