Working for Utah's Economy and Privacy

About the Public Protection Department

The Public Protection Department works to enforce state laws to safeguard the financial well-being of individuals and families across Utah. Whether it’s investigating scams or pursuing dishonest businesses, the office plays a vital role in helping consumers make informed choices and avoid exploitation.

Through collaboration with local, state, and federal partners, the office addresses a wide range of consumer issues. These issues include identity theft, online scams, deceptive advertising, and abuse targeting vulnerable populations. The office strengthens public trust and fosters a safer economic environment for all Utahns by holding bad actors accountable.

Commercial enforcement

The Commercial Enforcement Division safeguards Utahns by enforcing laws against deceptive practices, fraud, and abuse to ensure a fair, free, and competitive marketplace. The division has three sections: Securities and Real Estate, Consumer Protection, and Professional Licensing. These three sections represent divisions in the Utah Department of Commerce and work closely with them to protect Utah consumers from fraud and deception.

antitrust and data privacy
