The Investigations Division protects Utahns by uncovering complex and serious criminal activity and supporting the prosecution of violations of state and federal law. Working closely with prosecutors in the Justice Division, investigators identify, investigate, and help bring to justice offenders involved in some of Utah’s most challenging cases.
The division investigates complex white-collar and financial crimes, public corruption, general fraud, child abuse and exploitation, cybercrime, internet fraud, identity theft, and internet crimes against children. At the request of local authorities, the division also assists with significant violent crimes, including homicide, aggravated assault, and sexual offenses.
In addition, the Investigations Division provides investigative support for prosecution referrals and conducts investigations referred by the Grand Jury Panel of Judges to determine whether sufficient cause exists to convene a state grand jury.
The division includes the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), the School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration (SITLA) investigative unit, the Cooperative Disability Investigation Unit (CDIU), and the Utah Trafficking in Persons Task Force (UTIP). Investigators coordinate closely with local, state, and federal partners and employ advanced investigative techniques to dismantle criminal networks, apprehend offenders, and make Utah a safer place to live.
