Tim Merrill is an Assistant Attorney General in the Tax, Transit & Financial Services Division of the Office and represents the Utah Transit Authority. Before joining the Office of the Utah Attorney General, Tim was a partner and shareholder in the law firm Hansen Merrill Merritt, P.C., where he practiced in federal and state courts as a trademark and copyright lawyer. Tim was appointed a Special Prosecutor for Utah County and as a Special Deputy District Attorney in Salt Lake County. He was the city attorney for Highland and American Fork, Utah.
Tim served on the Utah Supreme Court’s Committee on Professional Conduct and in 2024 was selected as one of Utah’s Legal Elite by Utah Business.
Tim received his J.D. from the J. Reuben Clark Law School, and graduated magna cum laude in history from Brigham Young University, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Alpha Theta. In law school he was the Associate Editor of the International Law and Management Review and served as guardian ad litem on the Fort Duchesne Reservation where the Ute Indian Tribe is headquartered. During his education Tim was the recipient of the Alvina Soffel Barrett Scholarship, William Snow Award, and Eugene Campbell Award in history.
For over a decade Tim taught as an adjunct professor at the university. Outside of work, he enjoys ultimate frisbee, reading, and making food for his family and friends.
