West Bountiful Man Arrested, Compared to ‘Catch Me If You Can’ Con Artist

During the COVID-19 pandemic, our communities and worlds have changed. We have adjusted to a new normal as workplaces and schools closed. During this time, the Investigation Division of the Utah Attorney General’s Office continued to work tirelessly on protecting Utahns and our communities. Below is a case Attorney General Investigators were involved in during the COVID-19 pandemic.

May 13, 2020

A West Bountiful man, recently convicted of practicing law without a license, was arrested on evidence tampering and forgery charges.

A Utah Attorney General’s Office Special Investigations Unit Investigator was contacted by an outside agency regarding the forgery of a judge’s signature on a forged court document in the Ogden area. The agency’s request for help resulted in multiple cases being filed against the suspect by the Attorney General’s Office along with other police agencies and county prosecutors.

The Attorney General’s Office Investigator was tenacious in following the evidence and the money trail left by the suspect in what has turned out to be a decades-long scheme.

Robert Sinclair Argyle, 35, defrauded family, friends, and coworkers. He posed as a Stanford educated attorney, worked at law firms, represented clients, stole trust funds, and fabricated numerous documents.

The Attorney General’s Office Investigator’s dedication exposed all the scams committed by this man. Argyle was compared to the fraudster Frank Abagnale highlighted by the movie Catch Me If You Can.

The suspect has been charged in the 2nd District Court with Tampering With Evidence, a third-degree felony; and Forgery, a third-degree felony.

He is being held without bail in the Davis County Jail.
